A Great Example of How Superhero Comics Tackle Real Life Tragedy

Sometimes, everything goes terribly wrong when superhero comics draw their inspirations from the real world. The results can seem hokey, sensationalist or just plain dull. So what happens when the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Daredevil focuses on a shooting clearly based on the death of Trayvon Martin? None of the above. It’s a strong example of how to craft entertainment from present-day headlines.

Stephen Totilo and I talk about what makes Daredevil #31 so good and spend a bunch of time discussing a superhero homage/pastiche that pumps fresh energy into alternate versions of characters from both Marvel and DC’s universes.

Here’s the rundown of comics discussed this episode:

Daredevil #31 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee and Javier Rodriguez

Copra Compendium, Vol 1. by Michel Fiffe

Hawkeye #7 by Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber and Jesse Hamm
