On May 28, 2010, an early morning fire raged through a two-story house in Urbana, Illinois. All but one made it out safely.
Ashley Ames, 23, was burned over 80 percent of her body and was airlifted into intensive care. On July 6, she sadly passed away due to medical complications.
Volitionâs Steve Jaros, senior writer on the Saints Row franchise, lives in the same neighborhood. âIn the interest of full disclosure I donât know Ashley or her family, nor am I associated with the charity save for asking for a few donations,â Jaros tells Kotaku, âBut my wife is a burn survivor so this story particularly struck a chord with me.â
In an effort to help pay off the medical bills burdening Ashleyâs family, Volition has contributed items to a charity auction in Ashleyâs name. One of those is voice acting role in Saints Row 3. The role, Jaros says, is for a pedestrian. âYou will get to scream, curse, be hit by cars and shoot guns,â Jaros adds. If the winner asks nicely, he adds, he might even write something specific for the winner.
Currently, the winner will have to provide transportation to Volition, but if the bidding gets high enough, he thinks something might be able to be worked out â even if that means Jaros personally buying a plane ticket for the winner.
âKnowing that my colleagues in the games industry are some of the most generous and kindhearted people in the world,â Jaros tells Kotaku. âI reached out to them with Ashleyâs story and they responded with an overwhelming amount of love and kindness, and Iâm hoping you can do the same.â
