Comments lack a tone of voice (hint hint, dear readers) so a Capcom-Unity userâs query: âDo you guy [sic] ever think about starting a new game franchise??â might sound chippy. Instead, Capcomâs Christian Svensson answered politely that yes, they do.
âWeâll always be experimenting with new IP,â Svensson replied, then he ticked off nine new IPs Capcomâs rolled out for the current generation. âIf you wanted to take a more liberal view of something like TvC, you could call it a new franchise for us, even if it isnât new IP (all characters have previously existed). and Iâm sure some others Iâm forgetting off the top of my head.â
Whatever you think of them, Iâd classify Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Bionic Commando the same way. We hadnât seen them in years.
âNaturally, we always need to be introducing new IP so that we have some percentage of them âstickâ to become ongoing franchises. But itâs always a balancing act both to keep fans happy and to manage risk.â
Itâs good that Capcom listens to this, because many others donât. But if I were to pick a publisher that abused its existing IP and sequelized it gratuitously, Capcom wouldnât even make the top 5.
