Thatâs what a lawyer representing Universal Music Publishing Group told the creator of 8-Bit DJ Hero, which resulted in one of the yearâs best parody games being yanked off the internet.
8-Bit DJ Hero, developed by Eric Ruth, took the premise (and name) of Activisionâs mash-up music game and took it back in time to the 1980s, dumbing down the controls and slipping in a tracklist full of songs like Ray Parker Jrâs âGhostbustersâ and Kenny Logginsâ âFootlooseâ.
While Activision seems to have been OK with the parody/tribute, Universal â who held the rights to some of the songs featured â was less accommodating. Despite protests that the game was free and that he was collecting zero profits from it, Ruth was still forced to take the game down, a final plea for reason met with the quote in the image above.
