Rockstar Games has confirmed that, at least at launch, the companyâs long-awaited open-world crime sim, Grand Theft Auto VI, will launch on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 only, with no mention of a PC version.
In a press release published on December 4, shortly after the company was forced to release the GTA 6 trailer early after it leaked, the studio confirmed that GTA 6 wonât be available on PS4 or Xbox One consoles, something that most people assumed even before the trailerâs release. But after the trailer was put online, it became clear this game wasnât going to run on those older machines.
But weirdly and frustratingly for PC gaming fans, Rockstarâs press release on Monday also confirmed it was continuing an old trend whereby new GTA games are only available on consoles at first, only showing up on PC later.
âGrand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of whatâs possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,â Sam Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, explained in a press release. âWeâre thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.â
2008âs Grand Theft Auto IV and its massive sequel, 2013âs GTA V, both launched on PS3 and Xbox 360, but skipped PC at first. GTA IV eventually landed on PC in December 2008. Not much of a wait. However, GTA V didnât come to PC until April 2015, nearly two full years later. And this trend of skipping PC happened again with 2018âs Red Dead Redemption II, though PC players only had to wait a yearâuntil November 2019âto play the open-world western.
Hopefully, when GTA 6, set in the Miami-like Vice City, launches in 2025, the wait for a PC port wonât be too lengthy. Itâs also possible that between now and 2025, Rockstar will actually announce the PC portâŠthough history says thatâs unlikely.
