By necessity, Super Smash Bros. on the 3DS is a very different game from its predecessors. Itâs built for a smaller and differently structured system and doesnât have some of the stuff that previous Smash games had, like a tournament mode. But, what one person claims are newly discovered audio files hidden inside the game seem to indicate that those features might have been in the works.

A user on Sounds Resourceâa website where users can share sound effects pulled from video gamesâhas apparently managed to access files where the Smash announcerâs familiar voice calls out elements that arenât in the final 3DS version of the game. Now, the voicework in these files could be elaborate fakes. But it definitely sounds like the booming intonation of the guy doing intros for Smash 3DS. The terms âBoss Battle,â âTourney,â and âEvent Matchâ all reference modes that have been in past games such as Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The â8 Player Smashâ announcement is the one thatâs most intriguing as it teases a beefed-up multiplayer option that the current game doesnât have.
Thereâs a chance that these sound files are for the Wii U version and exist as either a remnant of shared code. Or they might be a harbinger of how the portable and home console versions of Smash Bros. might work together. Weâve reached out to Nintendo for comment and will update this story if they respond.
