If you donât remember it from the last time we showed you, Lord Inquisitor is a fan-made Warhammer 40K short film that promises to be a lot better than anything Games Workshop has managed officially.

Inquisitor has switched from being something modelled and rendered using more traditional animation tools to a film thatâs being made usingâŚCryEngine. Or at least a modified version of it.
Back in 2012, we told you about something called Cinebox, which was a version of CryEngine Crytek had made for use in animation. Fast forward to 2014 and this is one of the first things thatâs been made using it.

Impressive. Even moreso when you consider that everything youâre seeing is rendered in realtime. Think of it as being similar to Valveâs Source Filmmaker, only you can make âcan your PC runâŚâ jokes every time you use this one.
The clip above was rendered on a single GTX 780ti. And if you see it on YouTube, you can watch it in 4K. Which is just nuts.
Hereâs how the projectâs creator, Erasmus Brosdau, explains it:
During the last months I have switched the render engine. Instead of V-ray I am now using the not yet released CryEngine Cinebox, a realtime solution for the creation of cinematics. Iâm excited to announce that this is a world premiere showing this new teaser, rendered in realtime on one single nvidia GTX 780 ti.
And all the images youâve seen the last weeks have been rendered in realtime as well â but nobody noticed
This is a great success for The Lord Inquisitor to be a pioneer in this area of film making and it will help the project a lot.
Crytek has been using it for internal cinematics for a little while now, on games like Warface, while it was also used in places on Ryse. Itâll be more interesting to see what other people can come up with, though.
