[Update: Service was restored to the PSN at around midnight]
If you’ve had trouble accessing PlayStation Network, Sony’s aware of it. There’s no timeline for when PSN might come back online—you can personally monitor its status on this website—but it’s been more than a few hours.
Sony has tweeted about the service problems twice today:
We're aware that some users are having trouble accessing PSN. Thanks for your patience as we investigate. https://t.co/8hMUSl2cCe

We are still working on resolving today's issues with PSN. Thanks for your continued patience. For current status: https://t.co/cLXo9fGH27

Neither tweet includes any useful information about what’s actually going on, why it’s taken so long for PSN to come back online, or when it’ll be fixed.
I asked Sony about all this today, but they didn’t have any details to share.
Weirdly, when you access the PlayStation Network website, you see this:
“PlayStation Network is currently experiencing connectivity issues. Click here for more details. 4th January 2016 at 10:20pm GMT to 7th January 2016 at 7am GMT”
I’ve followed up with Sony about this message.
Scattered reports suggest some users have had success logging in, but there doesn’t seem to be a consistency to it. They’re just one of the lucky ones.
Let us know what your experience has been like; we’ll keep an eye on it.
