Can you log onto the PlayStation Network via your PS3 console at the moment? We canât, and weâre getting reports plenty of other people canât either.
Attempts to log into the PSN on consoles are being met with the error message 80710A06. While American users began reporting the issue a few hours ago, Iâve since run into the same problem on my Australian unit and Brianâs console in Japan canât connect either.
A small message was posted on the PlayStation Blog earlier today warning that âcertain functions of PlayStation Network are downâ. If this is indeed global, and not some coincidence, the complete inability of people across the planet to sign into their accounts on a PS3 would seem to be a little more severe than that.
While Sony has yet to officially notify customers of the reasons behind the outage, activist group âAnonymousâ has been claiming to have been behind attacks against the PlayStation Network for a few weeks now, and while the groupâs leadership has sworn off attacking Sony customers, thereâs no accounting for the actions of the individuals or splinter groups marching under the Anonymous banner. If this is indeed them, and the outage is affecting PS3 owners worldwide, thatâs one hell of an attack.

Or, you know, it could just be one hell of a technical hiccup!
Weâve contacted Sony for comment, and will update if we hear back.
If any of you can connect to the PSN, let us know in the comments below!
UPDATE 2 Sony now says it could be a day or two before full service is restored
UPDATE â It seems Sony helpdesk employees have been sent the following email:
Hi,
Due to emergency maintenance all PlayStationÂźNetwork and Qriocity services including stores, account management, external auths and CST are currently unavailable since approx 5am GMT this morning.
We donât yet have an estimated time as to when services will be restored but will provide further updates when they are available.
Emergency Maintenance? I thought maintenance was something you planned, and did in advance?
