Is This The First Kinect-Created Music Video?

Some music video directors spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on fancy special effects. Filmmaker Dan Nixon just spent $150 on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Kinect to create the music video for Echo Lake’s ā€œYoung Silence.ā€

I don’t know about the song, but the imagery in Echo Lakeā€˜s ā€œYoung Silenceā€ is quite eerie and haunting, thanks to the Kinect’s depth sensing infrared technology and a little custom software. Dan Nixon explains how the effect was created.

ā€œAs far as I know (and I’m scared of checking) this is the first music video to be made with the Microsoft Kinect camera. The footage was shot on that piece of Ā£130 equipment and recorded to custom software running on a laptop. The depth data was then manipulated to get the whole band in one ā€˜space’ and then the fun started.

The end result is a unique and striking convergence of art and technology.

Update: To answer the question posed in the headline, no! Ollisixtynine from Germany wrote to share with us the video for ā€œNever Loved Your Eyes.ā€ Apparently he reads Kotaku, and this post made him sad. Sorry bout that!
