One of the refreshing things about The Last Of Usâ vision of the apocalypse was that it didnât involve destruction. Mankind hadnât been killed off by bombs, or aliens, but by nature itself, which was only too happy to reclaim our cities.
Itâs an aesthetic you donât see very often in this, our real and living world, but there are exceptions. And New Yorkâs North Brother Island is one of them. Tucked away on the East River between the Bronx and Rikers Island, itâs been uninhabited since 1963, and undeveloped as well thanks to the presence of an endangered species of bird.
Photographer Christopher Payne has visited the island â thanks to special access, since itâs normally closed to the public â and taken these stunning photos, which will be appearing inan upcoming book called North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City.
He chatted with Fast Company about his photos and his experience there, so head there for more pics
