3D. Had enough? Tough crap, it sounds like there will be more. And according to movie director James Cameron (pictured, with George Lucas), the future of 3D is being fueled by video games.
âVideo games are going to help propel the autostereoscopic (glasses-free) play because thatâs going to be the entry level for most people,â Cameron tells Yahoo. âThese single-viewing devices that are engaging the person to play these video games will drive a lot of investment in autostereoscopic displays for that very reason.â
Sounds like Cameron is talking about the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendoâs glasses-free gaming portable.
Cameron, who is currently writing the script for Avatar 2, is also keen to do an Avatar MMO in 3D, but thinks that no matter how successful glasses-free portables and TVs are, 3D glasses wonât vanish from theaters any time soon.
âI donât think weâll ever get rid of the glasses in movie theaters,â says Cameron. âNot in my lifetime, anyway, but weâre going to get rid of them at home because itâs a different viewing model type.â
The reason for this, says Cameron, is that people are distracted at home. âYouâre doing other things,â he continues. âYouâre pausing a game or a movie and going to get pizza or whatever it is. Itâs not the same very-dedicated sort of consciousness that you have in a movie theater, so getting rid of the glasses will be a big deal.â
