John Romero Offers Details on His New MMO-Like PC Shooter

It’s been a while since man/myth/legend/Doom co-creator John Romero put out a shooter. Almost ten years, in fact. Speaking with Eurogamer, Romero revealed some details on a new shooter he’ll be working on soon.

Romero says he’s ā€œalready kind of designed the thing,ā€ though the game isn’t in production yet. He described the game as be ā€œMMO-ish,ā€ which… well, really could mean anything.

ā€œIt’s a persistent game, it has persistent player data, the character grows and gets better over time. I think most gamers expect that now anyway, but this was a design I’d done a while ago. I think it’s pretty valid.

ā€œYou will be playing the game as you would expect a shooter to feel, but the specifics of your situation, narrative wrapper and reward system are all unique. I wouldn’t want to give out any specifics until I’m close to shipping it. I’ve learned my lesson about talking too soon about specific game features and release dates.ā€

Romero said that he’s not a fan of slower-moving cover-based games that have become popular in recent years, saying that he also doesn’t like it when characters are ā€œbullet spongesā€ that can absorb a lot of damage.

He attributes these types of games to the rise of the slower console controller, while saying that he’s ā€œa PC mouse and keyboard type player.ā€

Romero didn’t confirm whether or not his studio, Loot Drop entertainment, is going to be making the game. Loot Drop is currently working on Ghost Recon: Commander for Facebook.
