Oerba Yun Fang, Final Fantasy 13

The first time I played 2009’s Final Fantasy 13, I had no idea I was gay. I definitely didn’t know I was trans. But I immediately fell in love with the gorgeous dragoon Oerba Yun Fang as soon as she appeared—partially due to her design and partially due to her confident and cocky attitude.

I also was heavily infested in her relationship with Vanille, one that I now see as the most important romantic relationship in the game. But, at the time I was playing FF13, I was a totally straight guy crushing on a gorgeous woman who happened to have a homoerotic relationship in-game. Nothing gay about liking women, am I right?

It wouldn’t be until a decade later when I came out as trans that I would look back and realize I may have had a deeper crush on Fang for a number of less than straight reasons. Now when I revisit FF13, I can’t help but notice that Fang has essentially defined the type of woman I am into. I’m not complaining about that though. That’s just taste. — Willa Rowe, staff writer
