Not the Best Game Ever:Earthbound

As the stagnant Speak Up forum begins to fade and TAY rises to power, Speak Up on Kotaku will soon be Speak Up Among Yourselves, or whatever name you guys pick for it. In the meantime, commenter HerpDerpDerp doesn’t think the classic RPG Earthbound is as good as people say.

I think Earthbound is overrated, and I don’t even think it’s one of the 10 best RPGs on the SNES. Like, yeah, it’s quirky, it’s cute, all this, but… I didn’t find it very fun. I didn’t think it was nearly as “funny” or absurd as people say it is, and the gameplay was just… Meh.

I only bring this up because I’ve come across a lot of Earthbound worship and retrospective videos on YouTube, and these guys praise it like it’s the best thing ever… But I didn’t like it. Just like Shadow of the Colossus, SMB3, Grand Theft Auto, Read Dead Redemption, Arkham City, the Tales series and Resident Evil 4, it’s one of those games that everyone seems to think is incredible, but that I just don’t like. It’s not even that I dislike the kind of game Earthbound is – in fact, I’m a really big fan of Mother 3. But I really don’t agree with Earthbound‘s status as “ZOMG BEST GAYM ON TEH SNES”. There are games – like Ocarina of Time and Half-Life 2 – that reach the status of perfect, legendary games, but too many mediocre games are often put in the same class as them.
