PlayStation 3 Still Japan’s Bestselling Console, But PSP Claims First Place

Last week, Sony’s PlayStation 3 had the rare privilege of claiming the top spot on Media Create‘s hardware chart, outselling all hardware competitors. This week it gets knocked down to second place… by the PSP.

While the release of Resident Evil 5 in Japan gave the PS3 a noticeable sales boost over its take last week—then, a respectable 36,513 units, thanks to Sega’s Yakuza 3—it wasn’t enough to push it past the PSP. The PlayStation Portable moved almost 60,000 additional units, likely on the continued strength of Koei’s Shin Sangoku Musou Multi Raid.

Regardless of which Sony platform is selling best, its a noteworthy change from earlier in the year, when the Nintendo DSi and Wii dominated sales charts.

Bestselling hardware in Japan for the week of March 2nd to 8th is as follows.

PSP – 59,568

PlayStation 3 – 39,835

Nintendo DSi – 32,102

Wii – 16,560

Xbox 360 – 14,994

Nintendo DS Lite – 11,240

PlayStation 2 – 4,954

Will Sony be able to keep this pace up? With Musou Orochi Z, Killzone 2 and Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Empires coming to the PS3 over the next few months, and Monster Hunter G hitting the Wii in April, it should be an interesting Spring.
