[Update 3:58 p.m. EST] On the Steam forums and via Twitter, Valve has said that a power failure in their data centerâs uninterruptible power supplies was responsible. âThe power is back on now and weâre working to get service restored as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.â
[Update 3:06 p.m. EST] An 80-minute outage of Valveâs principal web presences, valvesoftware.com and steampowered.com, appears to be over. The Steam clientâs community and multiplayer features still seem to be knocked out. Weâll update as warranted. Weâve asked Valve for a comment on what happened.
The company earlier this week said it was possible that hackers had obtained credit card transaction data in an attack carried out last November. No word if this outage is related to or inspired by those events.

On the Valve forums, which are now back up, a community manager said the outage began around 1:30 p.m. EST.

Many of you have noticed Steam is downâyour PC/Mac clients, the store, the URLs steampowered.com and valvesoftware.com, everything. The official Steam Twitter feed said about 2:36 p.m. EST that âWe are investigating reported outages.â We have asked Valve for a comment.
