The animation director for Prince of Persia says the gameâs suffered from a migration of players away from it and to the God of War series, and says his gameâs tamer visuals, particularly death animations, are the reason why.
âWhen we make questionnaires and we ask, âwhat did you play in the past?â The answerâs âPrince of Persiaâ. âWhat do you play now?â âGod of Warâ. âWould you play Prince of Persia again?â âNo, itâs not hard enoughâ,â Jan-Erik Sjovall told CVG. Sjovall thinks gamer bloodlust also plays a role. Asked why players switched over since the 2008 Prince of Persia reboot, he told CVG: âPartially maybe the animations â the death animations.â
Sjovall says the upcoming Forgotten Sands will try to reclaim the difficulty and violence of Prince of Persiaâs Sands of Time trilogy. âSo the idea was clearly that weâd try to bring our old audience back, but also weâre winning a new audience,â Sjovall said.
But it sounds like Ubisoftâs drawn a line, and wonât copycat blood and gore just because itâs part of God of Warâs appeal.
âA lot of people ask, âwill you have gore in the game?â ⊠We want to have interesting fight sequences in there but not indulge in the violence like God of War does. We want to keep it interesting so the acrobatics, the story and the whole look are all supporting each other and people go, âyeah, I want to play that gameâ.â
