Shinji Mikami, the game designer behind Resident Evil, has always had a game heâs been dying to make.
âWhen it comes to my personal desires, Iâd like to make a true-3D horror game, something where youâd use glasses like in the Avatar film,â he told Japanese game magazine Famitsu. âItâs been my goal since the original Resident Evil to be the first in the industry to make a 3D game. There needs to be a large 3D television-owning userbase before that can happen, but I always like trying out new things first.â Mikami, of course, was speaking hypothetically and that userbase is still years off.
Currently, the game designer is hard at work on third-person shooter Vanquish for Osaka-based game studio Platinum Games (the team behind Bayonetta) and busy setting up a new studio (called Tango) of his own.
âOne of the reasons Iâm building a company is to raise the game makers of the future, people who havenât gone pro yet,â Mikami said. âGame development is often overseen from a pure business perspective here, which is unique to Japan, and I have the impression that environment tends to prune away young talent. I really want to make Tango a company run from a creatorâs perspective, one that expands upon new talent.â
While the company has decided its first title yet, Tangoâs debut game, Mikami added, probably wonât be out for âabout three yearsâ. Will be very surprised if the 3D television install base is large enough to merit a 3D Shinji Mikami game by then.
