A few months ago, DC Comics teased that its big status quo shifts would mean serious trouble for the romance between the Man of Steel and the Amazing Amazon. But donât worry, guys: Clark and Diana are doing fine. Just ask the Suicide Squad.
Recent eventshave made Supermanâs secret identity and mountain-moving strength things of the past. Wonder Womanâs only gotten more powerful, though, having ascended to godhood in her own title. A preview teaser showed Clark pulling a dumb stunt to try and get his powers back, followed by Diana successfully stopping him.
Then Clark said this:
But, in the latest issues of the Superman/Wonder Woman comicâby Peter Tomasi, Doug Mahnke, and othersâthey donât seem like theyâre on the verge of a break-up. But the story so far does show how this shift in power levels has changed the charactersâ relationship.
As in other Kryptonian-centric series, Superman/Wonder Woman #18 and #19 explore the ripple effects that Clarkâs outing and reduced power set are having in the DC Universe. The storyline in these issues has Clark and Diana looking into mysterious goings-on in Smallville and continue the down-to-earth focus thatâs been a hallmark of the new take on Superman. People in the small Kansas town have long been facing repercussions for living in the place where Superman grew up. This time, people have been disappearingâŠ
And thatâs not all thatâs gone missing.
Clarkâs new vulnerability isnât just emotional, either. A showdown with the Suicide Squad in this weekâs issue #19 is one of the clearest examples yet of just how much weaker Supermanâs become.
A few months ago, those bullets wouldâve bounced off of Clarkâs skin and this fight wouldâve been over much quicker. Now, Dianaâs worrying about her boyfriend in the aftermathâŠ
and heâs telling her not to fret.
These moments are a nice twist to the super-romance, which had felt a bit perfunctory before this. It felt like Superman and Wonder Woman were together because âof course, they should be.â Previously, Iâd been bored by this series because there didnât seem to be much drama in reading about two near-perfect, nigh-invulnerable heroes who could seemingly overcome anything together. But now, with Superman needing Wonder Woman to flyâsomething he used to do just fine on his own, rememberâtheir joint series might be a lot more interesting to watch.
