Legislators in Texas have proposed a bill that would expand what registered sex offenders would be required to disclose, including the release of online screen names. That could potentially even cover online gaming social networks.
While the bill, publicized by GamePolitics, doesnât explicitly name video game communication services like Xbox Live and PlayStation Home, it covers their services more broadly. The bill, currently under consideration, would require sex offenders to disclose the âInternet communication identifierâ used by the person. That could mean Gamertags and PlayStation Network usernames.
As GamePolitics points out, the wording of bill HB 22 could extend to limit sex offenders from using a âcommercial social networkingâ site or service altogether.
And thatâs not necessarily a bad thing, considering the disturbing frequency at which weâve been hearing about this sort of unsavory activity.
