The Sims is one of those game series that doesnât just allow cheating; it invites it. For many fans, tinkering with the gameâs inner guts is the best part of playing. The Sims 4 is no different. But itâs also very new. So letâs walk through the gameâs earliest secrets.
First off: hereâs how you cheat.
There are two main ways to cheat in The Sims 4, one being a tad more complicated than the other. If youâre just trying to use one of the official âapprovedâ cheats to, say, give yourself a ton of money, then all you need to do is press CTRL-SHIFT-C. Once you enter that combo on your keyboard, a text window will pop up on the top left side of the screen. For other cheats, however, you must first enter the phrase âtestingcheats trueâ into the text window that you opened using CTRL-SHIFT-C, then continue with your cheat code of choice. This also lets you execute other cheat codes that require you to use the mouse to shift-click on a specific object. In general, I like to set âtestingcheatsâ to âtrueâ if Iâm using cheats and then keep it that way for the rest of the time Iâm playing The Sims. Keep in mind that the game will automatically set it back to âtestingcheats falseâ when you travel to a different lot, however. A good rule of thumb is just to re-enable cheats after you see a loading screen.
A few other things to keep in mind:
If a cheat isnât working, make sure that youâve spelled everything correctly, as the strings of text can be more than a little tricky here.
If you care about your Sims, remember to be careful! Some cheats can be irreversible, or at least difficult to revise once youâve implemented them. I recommend building a separate world to trick out if you want to start using cheat codes.
Many of these cheats involve tweaking specific values, which therefore require putting in specific lines of text. In my experience, most of the values that Iâd like to adjust are in line with the way that skills are identified and named in the game itself. But if youâre having trouble, Iâd recommend consulting one of the exhaustive player-run databases for specific cheats. This one on Reddit is the best Iâve seen so far.
If you want to change specific Sims.
See this guy, eating cereal alone in his sad little kitchen in the middle of the night? This is a Sim named Zander I mostly made to test out Sims 4 stuff in the Kotaku office. I know: I feel bad for him already! But wait a few minutes and suddenly this is Zander:
Getting married to a Sim I just dropped into the world momentâs before. Love at first sight? If thatâs what you consider spawning a random Sim in your household and then artificially juking their relationship ratings, thenâŠsure, why not?
The point here is: if youâre not the kind of person who wants to sit around and wait for your Sims to progress at the gameâs normal pace, there are a number of easy ways to open up a given Simâs hood and fiddle with whatâs inside. Here are the best Iâve come across:
Get a Simâs unique ID number: sims.get_sim_id_by_name [Simâs first and last names]. This one is useful for specific situations, which Iâll get to momentarily.
To reset a Simâs mood to neutral: sims.remove_all_buffs
To add or modify a specific mood to a Sim: Sims.add_buff [name of buff, low/high]
To change a Simâs skill level: stats.set_skill_level [skill name] [1-10]. The skill names are pretty self-explanatory: âWriting,â âComedy,â âProgramming.â However, naming here is particularly tricky, as one commenter has already observed. Remember to combine skills with two or more words (âVideoGaming,â âGourmetCooking,â and so forth). Also, depending on the state of your Sim, the format is different. I had to use âMajor_Writingâ to boost Zanderâs skill as a professional writer, for instance. Just using âSkill_Fitnessâ worked to boost his gym-going abilities, meanwhile. For children, you have to specify that as well so it should look like this: âSkill_Child_Social.â Others have said that you must specify âAdultMajor,â but itâs worked both ways for me. GameFAQs has a good list of specific skills if youâre still looking for the correct terminology.
Complete current aspiration challenge and awards points: aspirations.complete_current_milestone.
To promote a Sim in his or her career: Careers.promote [NameOfCareer] (i.e. âsecretagentâ or âastronautâ)
To demote a Sim: Careers.demote [NameOfCareer]. Keep in mind that these two cheats donât allow you to dual-wield careers, so to speak. You still have to choose one, and the âdemoteâ command effectively kills off your current career. So, again: be careful!
To raise a Childâs Grade Performance: Works the same as with promoting careers, only add âGradeschoolâ or âHighschoolâ instead of the name of career.
To make your Sim âacquaintancesâ with all other Sims: relationship.introduce_sim_to_all_others
To destroy a relationship: relationship.destroy [your Simâs ID number] [target Simâs ID number]
Make all Sim friendly with one another: relationship.make_all_sims_friends.
To teleport your Sim: Shift-Click on ground where you want the Sim to move.
To cheat death: death.toggle. This switches the âdeathâ setting between true or false. When itâs âfalse,â that means death is switched off, so nobody will die.
To modify a Simâs relationship with another Sim: You have to activate the âtestingcheats trueâ code for these. Once youâve done so, enter âmodifyrelationship [your Simâs full name] [target Simâs full name] [50 or -50] Friendship_Mainâ to add or detract from their friendship rating. For the romantic rating, itâs the same thing except you enter âRomance_Mainâ at the end instead. The number â50â is just a placeholder here, also. Play around with specific values to see what it gets you.
Ok, you might be wondering. But what about adding that other Sim so Zander can get hitched in a matter of minutes? Well, that reminds meâŠ
If you want to add more stuff.
Building the estate from Downton Abbey might be easy in the abstract given how impressive The Sims 4âs building tools are. But all those rugs and tchotchkes donât come for free. Well, unless you cheat. Here are a few easy ways to get drop stuff into the game without having to keep as close an eye on how many Simoleons you have left:
To make all houses free: FreeRealEstate On
To get $1,000: Kaching or Rosebud
To get $50,000: Motherlode
To set a specific amount for household funds (ie, money): money
To make household objects infinitely available: objects.consumables_infinite_toggle [true|false]
To add a Sim to your household: sims.Spawn
To add a Sim separate from your household: sims.spawnsimple.
To make a handyman show up who can start fixing things at your house: first, enter âsoak.enable_soak_handyman_situation.â Only after youâve entered that, input: âsoak.create_soak_handyman_situation.â
To make a maid show up to start cleaning: start with âsoak.enable_soak_maid_situation,â then add âsoak.create_soak_maid_situation.â
To make a group of Sims show up for a party: enter âsoak.enable_soak_party_situation,â then follow with âsoak.create_soak_party_situation.â
If you just want to mess around.
Remember those giant toilets that started to appear shortly after The Sims 4 launched? Well, thereâs more where that came from if youâre the type of Sims player who likes to poke and prod your game and its inhabitants to see what whacky results this tampering will yield:
To resize objects: in build mode, press Shift+]
To make an object dirty (or clean!): Shift-click on that object when cheats are active.
To make your Sim behave like a maid: sims.add_buff buff_Role_ServiceNPC_Maid. To make your Sim stop behaving like a maid, enter the same command except with âsims.remove_buffâ at the beginning instead of âadd_buff.â
If you want to try to kill your Sims.
This is the one batch I havenât tested personally. But since a) trying to kill Sims is the favorite pastime for many players and b) itâs surprisingly hard to do so without using cheats, as Patricia recently discovered, I figured Iâd put these out there for others to try.
Here are some methods posted on The Sims forums:
âsims.add_buff buff_death_electrocution_warningâ âEquips a sim with a buff that will make him/her prone to dying while fixing an appliance; have the sim repair something electronic to trigger death
âsims.add_buff buff_Mortifiedâ âEquips a sim with the mortified moodlet/buff that will make him/her prone to dying from embarrassment
âsims.add_buff buff_Enragedâ âEquips a sim with the enraged moodlet/buff that will make him/her prone to dying from anger
âsims.add_buff buff_Hystericalâ âEquips a sim with the hysterical moodlet/buff that will make him/her prone to dying from hysteria
âsims.add_buff hunger_Starvingâ âPretty much a guaranteed death within 24 hours; sims will die of hunger
These donât automatically kill your Sims, mind you. They just put them in a state in which theyâre more likely to die. Is it just me, or does this game take a very sharp turn towards the morbid at times?
Now: these are just some of the cheats Iâve tested and found particularly useful. Theyâre not all of the cheats that have been uncovered for The Sims 4 so far. And even then, weâre still at the very beginning of the game, so thereâs no telling what other silliness of virtual lifehacks might surface in the future. In any case, if youâre a Sims veteran or someone whoâs been toying with The Sims 4, please chime in with your own suggestions below and Iâll continue to add to this list.
