Eleven years later, fans will once again be able to return to Final Fantasy XII’s vast, MMO-inspired fields and dungeons in HD and with a lot less jagged edges.
You wouldn’t know it from this list, but the series twelfth outing was actually pretty phenomenal. Final Fantasy has always tried to do two completely incompatible things equally well: change with each new game while also staying exactly the same. Different games in the series have attempted to square that circle with varying degrees of success, but maybe none has side-stepped it as elegantly as XII.
Looking back now, it definitely feels like the most Star Wars-inspired adventure Square Enix ever released. You start as a kid near a desert city. There’s an evil empire and a roguish mercenary with a slightly furry side-kick. Also a princess. I’m not usually one to applaud developers for going back to an old well but damn if this time doesn’t feel completely worth it.
