If youâre here in the Panel Discussion programming block, you might be a lapsed comics reader, trying to find a way back to the JLA Satellite. Or you might someone killing time until you pick up your weekly Wednesday pull list. Or maybe youâve said goodbye to dozens of longboxes to embrace the promise of digital comics. Whichever it is, youâre still interested in the good stuff.
Welcome, then, to the Panel Discussion Dozen Trio, where I pick out just-released or out-soon comics that I think are worth paying attention to. Ready? Then, letâs meet the sequential art thatâll be draining your wallet this week. Be sure to chime in with the books youâll be picking up or that you think everybody should be reading in the comments.
Jack Kirbyâs Fourth World mythology stands as the biggest contribution made by the King of Comics to the DC Universe. That strand of quasi-religious adventure begins to weave its way into the New 52 reboot with this issue of Wonder Woman. Writer Brian Azzarello and his various artist partners have given us a take on godhood thatâs been quirky and melodramatic. I think Kirbyâs cosmic deity characters might find a great interpretation in the hands of Wonder Womanâs current creators.
The solicits for this issue promise some interaction with the Avengers, which has been a part of Clint Bartonâs life thatâs been absent from this title. Itâs going to be great to see how writer Matt Fraction will handle the collision of Marvelâs big super-team into the more down-to-earth but still dangerous milieu where Hawkeye happens. Also, more art from David Aja. Always a great thing.
You get along with your in-laws? Yes? Good for you. Not everybody does, though, and the tension that arises from suddenly being related to people because of someone you love can be incredibly stressful. Itâs that stressâsomething that thousands of people deal withâthatâs making the current story in Saga so good. Itâs no bad enough the seriesâ leads come from warring cultures. Theyâre also trying to raise a baby while being hunted by various different factions. And that baby? Kidnapped by grandpa. Maybe you donât have the worst in-laws in the universe.
