Truly Great Cinema Comes To The PS3

From Fellini to Ford. From Clouzot to Capra. And everything in between. Online movie site Mubi.com is making its way to the PS3 and bringing its fantastic library of cinema with it.

From the PlayStation Europe Blog: “We are MUBI and we are basically transforming your PS3 console into your own online cinema. (You can still play games and all that, don’t worry!) We couldn’t resist the idea of everyone having their own exquisite film library-And that’s it in a nutshell.”

A Mubi application will soon become available on the PS3, allowing users to stream some of cinema’s best to the PlayStation 3. Mubi emphasizes quality over quantity. “Palm d’Or winners and simply films we think should have won awards. But that’s not all. We’ll bring you exclusive online premieres, collaborations with international film festivals, and retrospectives of some of the best cinema the world has ever seen.”

Mubi members can also follow and interact with fellow members. (Some guy named Martin Scorsese?)

While Sony has only revealed that Mubi for European PS3 owners, the Mubi.com site is available to everyone (I just signed up as “bashcraft”).

I haven’t even started using Mubi yet, but reading through this Scorsese’s profile and seeing him list Michael Powell’s The Red Shoes, really makes me think…I should see The Red Shoes. I like the Powell films I’ve seen, and Scorsese always bangs on about how great The Red Shoes is — so does my mom. I’ve never seen it! And being in Japan hasn’t made seeing it any easier.
