Why Pulp Fiction Was So Cool

When I saw Pulp Fiction, I was 14. It was the coolest thing I had seen in my entire life.

Since that day, I’ve seen the move probably a dozen times. Each time, I have more of an appreciation for the craft behind it. And so I loved this video essay, which went up at Press Play over the weekend. Written and edited by Peter Labuza and Matt Zoller Seitz, it takes a look at how the movie is cool, how Quentin Tarantino builds up his own characters’ mythology before challenging and tearing them down. Awesome.

This sort of makes me want to do a Tarantino marathon—it’s been far too long, for example, since I last saw Jackie Brown
