Yucky Sounding Desserts from Japan

Would you like some beef with your parfait? What about some raw tuna? Pork?

From February 9, an Italian restaurant in Osaka called Del Sole is serving up parfait ice cream desserts with slices of kuro (black) wagyu. It’s part of the restaurant’s special Valentine Day’s menu.

According to Entabe, the concept behind the dessert isn’t to gross everyone out, but show that you can enjoy meat with sweets. You can, but I’m not convinced I’d want to.

As Girls Channel points out, this is the latest in a line of unusual deserts. Last year in Kouchi Prefecture, a restaurant’s katsuo (skipjack tuna) parfait made waves online. It’s katsuo sashimi with garlic served on soft serve ice cream with green veggies, tomatoes, and Pocky.

Apparently, it’s rather popular among locals there.

Then, there’s tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) parfait, which was born in Aichi Prefecture and has been around for decades (it even has its own Wikipedia page).

You’re supposed to eat the cigarettes, too.

And which has also been around for a while.

These desserts are most unusual in Japan. Typically, parfait and cake are just that: parfait and cake. The addition of meat and various fried and raw things is unique to these particular restaurants.

As bad as some of these sound, they might taste a-okay. The recent chocolate French fries from McDonald’s weren’t so bad, so who knows, perhaps raw tuna in ice cream is tasty.
