Kotaku is seeking an experienced, self-directed writer to help drive our coverage of the most interesting stories in gaming, focusing on everything from companies and communities to hit releases and the latest cultural trends.Â
The Nights and Weekends Editor will work three weekday evenings (3pm â 11pm ET) and Saturday and Sunday (9am â 5pm ET). During the week, youâll do a mix of writing your own stories and editing stories from staff and freelancers. On the weekends, youâll focus on fast, smart news writing, covering breaking news while also surfacing interesting stories that are going under the radar.Â
You are a fit for this role if:
- You consistently file clean copy and have experience editing others
- You have a keen news sense and can identify stories our readers care about, especially ones that arenât coming from an industry press releaseÂ
- You have a punchy writing voice and are familiar with Kotakuâs general tone and coverage areas
- You can self-direct, self-publish, and exercise strong editorial judgment while working solo during off-hoursÂ
- You bring sharp angles and fresh framing to the dayâs headlines, with a sense of humor, wit, and expertise that matches Kotakuâs style
- You are familiar with the major companies, franchises, debates, and trends in gaming
- You have a good grasp of media law and journalistic best practices
- You have the editorial sensibility to know when a story needs speed, when it needs depth, and when it needs both
This is a position covered under the collective bargaining agreement with the WGA-E. The salary range for this position is $70,000 â $82,000.
Kotakuâs US office is located in NYC. We are open to both NYC-based and remote candidates who live within the US.Â
