This week I went to get my Oregon driverâs license. Unlike other state DMVs, you donât walk out the door with your card here. While the main office in Salem approves things, you carry around a provisional license on a piece of printed paper, which looks like something anyone with a decent printer could forge.

But it makes me wonder why it is I have to take this much care to be able to prove who I am before setting foot out the door.
