A File Cut From Resident Evil 4 Remake Is Fueling A Fresh Leon Wife Theory

Resident Evil fans are still haunted by the mystery of who Leon Kennedy might be married to after he appeared at the end of Resident Evil Requiem with a wedding ring around his finger. Director Koshi Nakanishi has seemingly been loving the tailspin Resident Evil ‘shippers have been in ever since, but hasn’t let slip any further clues about who Leon’s wife might me. So naturally, a random cut file from 2023’s Resident Evil 4 remake is filling the void as fans continue to speculate.

The file was first discussed online back in 2024. It was a photograph of an aged Ashley that wasn’t normally viewable within the game. “This is 100% a real photo made by Capcom,” wrote X user Eagle1Redeemed at the time (via TheGamer). “It has since been taken down in the FULL version of the game (released March 24, 2023) and only exists in the chainsaw demo version of the game (released March 10, 2023). The pic is in Hunnigan’s office, accessed through freecam.”

No one understood why it might have been put there in the first place, until now. It’s now been seized upon as a possible clue that Leon actually married Ashley. “Before RE9‘s release, we were racking our brains wondering why they needed a photo of an aged Ashley in her 40s for files, and why they tried so hard to hide it by deleting any content associated with it, but now it’s all clear as day,” wrote X user Nigkira on April 6.

Fueling the conspiracy is the idea that Capcom went out of its way to try to make this clue impossible to find. As Eagle1Redeemed wrote back in 2024, “idk why capcom took it down, but they did. and i’d say they did a damn good job of hiding that pic so far, bc currently SO few ppl know about it even tho it was showed almost 2 years ago. ofc i have my hopes but honestly, it could mean nothing. i’m up against immesurable odds.”

It could indeed still mean nothing. Resident Evil fans who absolutely didn’t want Leon ending up with Ashley are hoping this is just another example of datamined fandom getting way out over its skis. I’m sure Nakanishi is enjoying every moment of it.
