Whatās the most surprising thing about Mega Man Dual Override? That it exists? Or that itās still coming to last-gen consoles when it launches in 2027? Capcom revealed its classic icon will return to its roots for another 2D adventure and Iām hopeful it will be more impressive than Mega Man 11.
We only got a brief teaser at the Game Awards but it was enough to appreciate that Mega Man has a fresh 2.5D look in what otherwise appears to be a very traditional spin on the Blue Bomberās formula. He jumps! He shoots! He getās knocked back when he gets hit. What more do you want, folks?
Hereās the snippet of gameplay we got:
Why am I more hopeful this time around when Capcom has otherwise failed to reinvigorate the franchise in the past? Well, the Capcom of today is different from the Capcom of the mid 2010s. Itās shown a commitment to both quality control and experimenting with cool ideas even if they arenāt going to be commercial juggernauts, like last yearās Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.
The 2027 release date tells us this project is still early on in production, however, and Iām guessing itās got a relatively small team. Maybe it can at least throw in a few fresh ideas and get the ball rolling on a wider resurgence. It would be great to see Mega Man X also come back, or get that new 3D Mega Man fans have dreamt of for decades now. Until then, Iāll settle for a modern day rematch against the Yellow Devil or an equally cheap boss fight.
