Here’s Every New Mega Evolution Added In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Raichu will join the others in the Mega Dimension DLC, but here's every new form in the base game

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is shaking up the series’ formula in more ways than one. It’s got real-time combat, it all takes place in one city rather than an entire region, and it has a new take on multiplayer to take advantage of that new battle system. Even with all this newness, perhaps the most exciting thing Game Freak is adding is more of something old: Mega Evolutions. These superpowered temporary transformations have long been one of Pokémon fans’ favorite battle gimmicks from over the years, and since we’re heading back to Kalos, their region of origin, what better time than now to add a wave of new Mega Evolutions? The game is officially out in Australia, and that means we now know every new form added in Legends: Z-A. So here’s the full list. Spoilers ahead!

Mega Dragonite

Mega Dragonite was the first new form revealed for Legends: Z-A. It emphasizes traits from its pre-evolution, Dragonair, by including a jewel on its tail and adding wings to the sides of its head. It maintains its Dragon/Flying typing, but becomes exceptionally faster and stronger in this form. Mega Dragonite views taking out an enemy quickly as an act of kindness, and has a jolly big smile when it uses powerful attacks because it knows all this violence will be over soon. It’s basically Superman.

Mega Victreebel

Pokémon used a spooky found footage video to reveal Mega Victreebel, but if you take it out of that environment, it is one of the goofier looking Mega Evolutions in the series. The pitcher plant Pokémon’s body has become so engorged with acid that it ties one of its own vines around its throat in order to contain all of it within its bulbous stomach. Now it hops around on its belly as it stalks its prey and loosens the grip around its neck when it needs to projectile vomit its acid onto an enemy.

Mega Hawlucha

Hawlucha’s new Mega form is probably the most straightforward one we’ve seen thus far. It gets buff like it’s been downing creatine, dons a new mask and cape combo, and its feathers form a belt around its waist. Mega Hawlucha also gets a signature move called Flying Press that it used on Machamp in its reveal cinematic.

Mega Malamar

Mega Malamar got the red carpet treatment ahead of its reveal, but that is all of its own design, as the squid-like creature was hypnotizing people into loving it. The new form literally expands Malamar’s brain and causes its slender body to glow like your favorite gamer keyboard. Its psychic power has become so overwhelming that it is able to completely rewrite people’s personalities.

Mega Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja

After getting the shaft back in Pokemon X and Y, the Kalos starters are all getting Mega Evolutions in Legends: Z-A. All three of them appear to be maintaining their original typing, but each of them got a bit of a glow-up in the transformation. Chesnaught now wields an axe-like weapon that it can remove from its back and swing at enemies, Delphox goes full Elphaba and rides a broom to lean into its witch theme, and Greninja…turns upside down as it hangs from a giant water shuriken. Unfortunately, each of them will only be available in Legends: Z-A through online battles and seasonal rewards, so you won’t be able to get them right out of the gate and you’ll have to climb the ranks to get their Mega Stones. Bummer.

Mega Raichu X and Y

After a decade of me whining about it, Game Freak is finally throwing Raichu a bone. The electric mouse is getting not one, but two Mega Evolutions through Legends: Z-A’s Mega Dimension DLC. We’ll have to wait until some time post-launch to use either of them, but their designs both seem like a mash-up of Raichu and its pre-evolution Pikachu, similar to some Mega concepts like Dragonite and Ampharos. Mega Raichu X is a physical attacker with big paws, an electromagnetism-powered floating body, and two Pikachu-like tails, while Mega Raichu Y is a speedy special user that looks a lot like Pikachu but with a Raichu-like tail and big lightning-bolt horns.

From here on out, we’re going to be talking about the Mega Evolutions that were not in the trailers, so if you don’t want to be spoiled, here’s your last chance to skedaddle.

Spoiler Warning

Mega Clefable

Two more of the original 151 are getting Mega Evolutions alongside Victreebell and Dragonite. The first is Mega Clefable, which grows wings, making it a Fairy/Flying-type when it’s in this form.

Mega Starmie

The second of the unrevealed OGs is Starmie, and I just…can’t stand this. The starfish Pokémon’s limbs grow and it becomes more “humanlike,” meaning it stops spinning and floating around and starts walking on its new legs. It’s so goofy and awful to look at. I love a goofy Mega but Starmie was such a cool, mysterious, almost ethereal being and now it’s running around like something in a Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

Mega Meganium

As fans theorized, all three starters in Legends: Z-A get a Mega form. First up is Mega Meganium, which is a pretty simple but effective upgrade. The dinosaur gets more flowers around its neck, and they’re much thicker than the pedals it wears in its standard form. Mega Meganium gains the Fairy type on top of its standard Grass when in this form.

Mega Feraligatr

Mega Feraligatr, meanwhile, is one of the more odd and elaborate designs in the new Megas. The alligator now wears a red, hood-like attachment that, when enclosed over its head with the jaw-like additions on its arm, looks like a giant Totodile head. That’s one way to continue the trend of Mega Evolutions bringing in aspects from previous evolutions, I suppose. Feraligatr gains the Gragon typing after it Mega Evolves.

Mega Skarmory

Skarmory’s Mega form gives the steel bird gold plated armor, as well as longer, sharper talons.

Mega Froslass

Mega Froslass mostly looks like Froslass after receiving limb-lengthening surgery. Girl is giving legs for days and her whole outfit is made longer and flows to accommodate her increased height.

Mega Emboar

Like Meganium, Emboar is a pretty straightforward upgrade for the last of Z-A‘s starters. It now wields a fire spear and has a sort of top knot going on on its head. Unlike the other two starters, Emboar doesn’t receive a new typing when in its Mega form, and stays Fire/Fighting.

Mega Excadrill

Excadrill is another simple Mega design, with each of its shovel-like hands and its headpiece all turning into long, spiky appendages.

Mega Scolipede

Scolipede doesn’t change types when it Mega Evolves, but it does get a thick set of armor to cover its body. Its antennae also become sharp, blade-like attachments on its head. You don’t want to be on the wrong end of this guy’s headbutts.

Mega Scrafty

Scrafty is based on lizards molting their skin, but in this case, its skin is turning into what looks like sagging pants and other signifiers of urban fashion. The Mega form’s shed skin has turned white and looks like a hoodie.

Mega Eelektross

Mega Eelektross grows two “false” heads, which are apparently made out of mucus, according to the Pokédex. One seems to carry a negative charge, while the other is a positive one. Put them together and Eelektross can now generate more powerful electric charge than ever before.

Mega Chandelure

Mega Chandelure gains another set of candles to add to its chandelier body, as well as a crown-like headpiece. It’s effective, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if folks feel like it’s not different enough from Chandelure’s standard form.

Mega Pyroar

That said, no one is beating Mega Pyroar in the “go girl, give us nothing” competition. The lion’s mane gets bigger and that’s about it. Simba got a fresh cut, I guess.

Mega Floette

In its base form, Floette is a tiny little fairy with a flower it carries with it at all times. After Mega Evolution, it’s still a little guy, but its flower grows substantially and now “attacks enemies on its own.”

Mega Barbaracle

Barbaracle’s Mega form gains several new arms to slap enemies around with, which makes its shift from Rock/Water to Rock/Fighting pretty apt. The Pokédex mentions, though, that growing all these new extremities is overwhelming to the head, which makes fighting far more mentally taxing than it used to be.

Mega Dragalge

Dragalage’s Mega form is pretty sick. The dragon/poison Pokémon resembles sea dragons that camouflage themselves to look like seaweed, but after Mega Evolution, it becomes far more conspicuous, with flowing algae-like coattails sprouting from its body.

Mega Zygarde

Zygarde is one of the main characters in Legends: Z-A, and as such, its Mega Evolution is one of the most elaborate in the game. This Pokémon already transforms multiple times across the franchise and its Mega Evolution, which has it becoming a massive, alien-like creature that holds a huge cannon over its head, is pretty in-line with its several forms.

Mega Drampa

♬ suara asli – Dot-shi – Dot-shi

Drampa’s base form is meant to be evocative of a wise old man in dragon form. Mega Evolution allows it to “regain its youth” and put some pep in its step once more.

Mega Falinks

Finally, we have Mega Falinks. The base form is made up of several helmet-like critters who stand in a row, but when it Mega evolves, these little soldiers take on a new battle formation that includes a sword and shield in its two “hands.”

Those are all the Mega Evolutions in Legends: Z-A, but presumably more will be added in the Mega Dimension DLC when that launches in the coming months.
