We still donât know much about Sonic the Hedgehog 4, but one of the big questions fans have had about the film is whether or not Jim Carrey would return as Doctor Eggman given his fate at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Now, we have our first teaser for the film, and it not only confirms Carreyâs return, but that Keanu Reevesâ Shadow will be back as well.
We donât get any real footage of the film in the teaser, but we do get a voiceover from Carrey saying, âYou think your world is safe, but your time is about to run out. The chaos has only just begun.â As the egghead gives his speech, we see the Chaos Emeralds, each with flashes of different characters inside, including Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Sonicâs human parents Maddie and Tom. Shadow also makes an appearance, and Reeves has been confirmed to return in the film.
The big reveal here is that Carrey is returning as Eggman, who appeared to have died at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, sacrificing himself to stop his grandfatherâs plan to destroy the world. There have been rumors that Sonic 4 will take place at least partially in a different timeline in which Eggman has conquered the world. Amy is supposedly from this alternate universe, which would explain how Carreyâs mad scientist could be both alive and also still an antagonist given the originalâs change of heart at the end of the third movie.
Also joining the cast are Matt Berry, Ben Kingsley, and Nick Offerman, but we donât know what roles theyâll be playing just yet.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is coming to theaters a year from now on March 19, 2027, and will star Frozen and Good Place actor Kristen Bell as Amy.
