Elden Ring Live Action Film Gets A Release Date And A Roundtable Hold’s-Worth Of New Cast Members

Who will scream "Curse you, Bayle!" and will the walls of the theater shake appropriately?

A24’s Elden Ring film just got a release date several years down the road, as well as enough new cast members added to the roster to populate an entire Roundtable Hold and then some.

As shared by The Hollywood Reporter, we’ll see Elden Ring hit theaters on March 3, 2028. When it arrives, it will include the acting talents of Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz, all new to the cast list today. They will join the handful of actors that have already been announced: Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny and Nick Offerman.

Unfortunately, we have no information whatsoever on what characters any of these actors will be portraying. We also do not really know how much or which bits of Elden Ring‘s winding and purposefully messy plot the film will focus on, so it’s difficult to make guesses. I feel pretty safe speculating that we’ll likely be following a Tarnished on their journey through The Lands Between and will likely see major highlights along the way, such as battles with Godrick the Grafted and Starscourge Radahn. We’ll probably also visit the Roundtable Hold and the folks hanging around there. But even that’s not for certain! The film is being directed by Ex Machina and Civil War‘s Alex Garland, and its production team includes Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Vince Gerardis, and George R. R. Martin. Martin being onboard is especially interesting since he worked on the worldbuilding for Elden Ring originally, which suggests to me that whatever we’re going to see necessitated an expert on the history of The Lands Between.

Despite the difficulty of guessing who any of these folks might be, I took a stab at the new cast members’ roles as follows:

Tom Burke has appeared in a number of BBC series such as The Musketeers and War & Peace, but may be best known to wider audiences as Praetorian Jack in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. He’s got a rugged handsome thing going on, so I could see him showing up as Blaidd the Half-Wolf or maybe even Radagon.

Havana Rose Liu is a model and actor who is best-known as Isabel in Bottoms. She’s giving off some Fia, Melina, or Malenia energy to me.

Sonoya Mizuno was Araminta in Crazy Rich Asians and has also been in La La Land, the live-action Beauty and the Beast, and is currently portraying Mysaria in HBO’s House of the Dragon. She also has some Melina energy going on, but would also feel right as Queen Marika or the witch Ranni.

Sir Jonathan Pryce has a long, award-laden career on stage as well as in film and television, with roles in films like Pirates of the Caribbean and in TV series like Game of Thrones, where he played the High Sparrow. He’s also appeared in one video game: he was Field Marshall Robert Bingham in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Pryce has the kind of long theatrical resume with loads of Shakespeare on it that makes one perfect for a FromSoftware game, so I’d not be surprised to see him show up in a dramatic and prominent role like Sir Gideon Ofnir.

Ruby Cruz has been in Bottoms as Hazel Callahan and also played Princess Kit in the short-lived Willow revival series. She might show up as Roderika the spirit tuner, or maybe Millicent. Or, if the film takes a darker turn, perhaps Hyetta, the blind priestess with a taste for Shabriri Grapes.

John Hodgkinson is another Shakespearean actor with a long career onstage and plenty of TV and film credits as well. Could this man scream “Curse you, Bayle!” to the heavens with the energy necessary to shake a movie theater? Maybe!

Jefferson Hall was Hugh in Game of Thrones and plays both Jason and Tyland Lannister in House of the Dragon. I could see him fitting a lot of different parts in Elden Ring, including Rogier, Kenneth Haight, or Varre. Going through all these roles is really reminding me of the sheer scope of Elden Ring and the wide cast of weird characters available both for the spotlight or for brief cameo appearances.

Okay, Google Emma Laird with me real quick if you’re not already familiar with her work in Mayor of Kingstown on Paramount or anything else, and then tell me that she’s not Malenia or Queen Marika.

Finally, Peter Serafinowicz has been in a ton of things you’ve probably seen, ranging from Shaun of the Dead to How to Train Your Dragon to Guardians of the Galaxy, and even video games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and LittleBigPlanet 3. He’s also got a credit for a FromSoftware game already, having played Pate in Dark Souls 2. Serafinowicz also looks and sounds like he could give a hearty “Curse you, Bayle!” with the best of them, but would make sense in any number of roles for adult men with a very wide range. He’s got a solid array of voice acting credits specifically, which leads me to think he might be voicing a character that won’t be portrayed physically by a human necessarily, such as Alexander the Warrior Jar or Boc the Seamster. Or maybe he’s Patches?

Also, literally any of these people could be the Tarnished! Or, like, the face/voice of some CG or practical monstrosity, like whatever A24 plans to do with Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy (big snake freak), Godrick the Grafted (messed-up guy who killed a bunch of people and glued their limbs to himself), Starscourge Radahn (big man, little horse), or Margit/Margott (mean noisy fellow with too many horns). Elden Ring is rife with Weird Guys! We have so many options!

The one other clue we have as to what might be going on in the Elden Ring film is a clip of the set that a fan managed to sneak earlier this month while wandering through some random field in England. The clip shows a church of Marika, which is common enough throughout Elden Ring, so it’s difficult to say which one it might be. We can hazard a guess at probably Limgrave given the landscape around is…green, and not populated by toxic red goop or irritating swamps or snow, but “Limgrave will be in the Elden Ring movie” is hardly a dramatic revelation.

Frankly, the level of mystery around this adaptation is both exciting and apropos to the already mysterious universe. I almost hope they don’t tell us much more about it ahead of that 2028 release date. I would, however, like to see the horse that will be playing Torrent. A24, please show me the horse, thank you.
